How does Envision work?

Envision is a sustainability framework and rating system created by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure to help infrastructure be more sustainable, resilient, and equitable. Envision is designed for use across a range of civil infrastructure sectors and project types. Unlike LEED, which focuses primarily on buildings, Envision is specifically designed for infrastructure projects, addressing their broader impacts on communities and the environment. Envision is utilized by project owners, designers, constructors, and operators worldwide, helping to address the impacts of climate change and promote environmental justice in the modern world.

Envision takes a collaborative and systems approach to infrastructure planning, construction, and operations by focusing on five categories:

  1. Quality of Life focuses on the project's impacts on the surrounding community’s well-being, mobility, and unique features.

  2. Leadership focuses on team collaboration, long-term planning, and economic impact on the community.

  3. Resource Allocation examines the materials, energy use, and water use during project construction and operation.

  4. Natural World investigates the impacts of project siting, conservation, and ecology of the land around the project.

  5. Climate and Resilience focuses on the carbon and air pollutant emissions and the long-term resilience of the project.

Projects that have completed the Envision verification receive an Envision sustainability award based on their sustainability performance: Verified, Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum.
