Client Alert: GHG Protocol and ISO Moving Toward a Single Global Carbon Accounting Standard
/Plus updates on the Scope 2 consultation and the new Actions and Market Instruments (AMI) reporting proposal.
Standards Consolidation
On July 29, 2026, GHG Protocol announced plans to consolidate its corporate standards with ISO's 14064-1, working toward one unified, co-branded global standard for corporate greenhouse gas accounting. The combined standard would fold in GHG Protocol's existing standards (Corporate Standard, Scope 2 Guidance, and Scope 3 Standard), and outputs from the Actions and Market Instruments (AMI) workstream, with a draft standard for public consultation estimated for Q2 2027.
Scope 2 Consultation Results
GHG Protocol also released results from its Scope 2 standard public consultation, which drew nearly 1,100 responses from 56 countries. Feedback showed broad support for more accurate and consistent electricity emissions accounting, though views differ on the best path forward for reporting on renewable energy purchases. Multiple reporting approaches are now being explored in response.
AMI Standard Update
Public feedback from the AMI standard development process RFI was also shared. The proposal introduces a "multi-statement" reporting model, letting companies report three distinct pieces: physical emissions from their own operations and value chain, market-based emissions tied to instruments like certificates and contracts, and a separate GHG impact statement reflecting the emissions effect of their broader climate actions and investments.
What This Means for Clients
Corporate GHG reporting requirements may shift over the next 1-2 years as these frameworks converge. Companies currently reporting under GHG Protocol or ISO 14064-1 should watch for the 2027 consultation and consider how a multi-statement AMI approach could affect how they report both emissions and climate actions going forward.
KERAMIDA will continue monitoring this process and update clients as more details emerge.
