8:50 a.m. – 9:25 a.m. Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHGs) Accounting 101
Measuring GHG emissions is the first step in developing a Climate Transition Plan by a corporation and a Climate Action Plan by a city. In this session, we’ll walk participants through the process of measuring scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions and establishing a baseline year.

Verification and assurance of environmental, social and governance (ESG) data – and especially GHG data – has become an important requirement toward achieving transparency in sustainability reporting. Customer data platform reporting already requires third-party assurance. Proposed Securities and Exchange Commission and California regulations will impact many companies and they do require third-party assurance for GHG reporting. The session will discuss the difference between data verification and assurance and will present the assurance process.

12:45 – 1:20 p.m. Climate Risks and Opportunities - Climate Scenario Analysis
Climate change poses a financial risk, as well as opportunities, for corporations and municipalities.  We’ll outline the process for assessing risks and opportunities and discuss their importance. Such risks and opportunities need to be assessed and addressed before a Climate Transition Plan can be developed.

2023 has been called the Year of the Climate Transition Plan. Comprehensive Climate Transition Plans include GHG reduction targets and strategies on how an entity plans to meet those targets. We’ll walk participants through establishing GHG reduction targets, and strategies for companies and municipalities on how they will meet such targets – based on material needs, financial constraints and technology advancements.

Are offsets greenwashing? Carbon offsets may be a legitimate bridge to reach a net-zero stage if they are supplementing actual GHG reduction strategies. We’ll explain carbon offsets and how they can be used in climate action planning.

As corporations continue to strive for ways to tie sustainability into their values and operations, certifications can be an effective tool to show their commitment, transparency, and excellence in sustainability leadership. B Corp Certified Corporations exhibit the highest levels of social and environmental performance while remaining accountable to both their stakeholders and shareholders. We will walk through what it means to be a B Corp, the certification process, as well as the benefits of being certified. This introduction to B Corp Certification will help you determine if becoming a B Corp is the right fit for your corporation in its ongoing sustainability journey.
