Stream & Wetland Delineation for Pennsylvania Utility Pipeline
Overview:
A major utility company needed environmental delineation, permitting, and restoration support for approximately five miles of pipeline-related activities, including multiple access points requiring temporary stream and wetland crossings. The project also involved active streambank erosion that had exposed an existing pipeline, requiring a restoration solution that would protect the pipeline, stabilize the stream channel, and minimize impacts to aquatic resources.

Stream & Wetland Delineation and Agency Coordination
KERAMIDA conducted approximately five miles of stream and wetland delineations to support pipeline-related activities. The project corridor included multiple access points requiring temporary stream and wetland crossings. KERAMIDA evaluated these locations to support safe and compliant access while minimizing impacts to aquatic resources.
The work included coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to obtain required federal clearances for pipeline construction. KERAMIDA prepared and submitted the necessary documentation and successfully obtained USFWS clearance for the proposed work.
Stream Restoration & Bank Stabilization
In one area, existing conditions required stream restoration and bank stabilization due to active erosion and an exposed pipeline within the stream channel. KERAMIDA worked closely with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) to develop and obtain approval for a corrective action plan.
The approved approach included the selective removal of wetland material from one side of the stream and its reuse to cover the exposed pipeline on the other side, supplemented with gabion baskets for structural stability. The restoration design modified the stream’s sinuosity to reduce erosive forces, stabilize the channel, protect the integrity of the pipeline, and minimize sediment transport downstream.
This project demonstrates KERAMIDA’s experience delivering integrated environmental permitting, stream and wetland delineation, and restoration solutions for linear infrastructure projects, as well as our ability to coordinate with federal and state agencies to resolve complex environmental challenges.
