Former Norge Dry Cleaning Facility Remediation
Remediation / Monitoring / Site Assessment
Following competitive bidding, KERAMIDA was selected for implementation of a proposed alternative remedial approach at the former Norge dry cleaning facility in Indianapolis, Indiana. The remedial approach was Enhanced Reductive Dechlorination (ERD) by injection into the source area and immediately down-gradient to address residual groundwater impacts of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (cVOCs).
The scope included:
Completion of the Remediation Work Plan (RWP) for IDEM approval
Quarterly groundwater monitoring to demonstrate treatment
Vapor intrusion monitoring of properties near the shallow portion of the dissolved phase plume
Semi-annual progress reporting
Site assessments from 2005 to 2014 delineated the cVOCs plume extending over a distance of 2,200 feet and across multiple properties utilized for residential, agricultural and commercial applications. Vertically the cVOCs plume extends across seven stratigraphic horizons from 15 to 92 feet below ground surface (ft-bgs) which are monitored via a network of 93 wells to depths of 115 ft bgs.
The ERD remedial design included injection of 3DMe and BDI-Plus manufactured by REGENSIS into eight areas totaling 50,000 square feet and vertical depths of 12 to 45 ft bgs. KERAMIDA conducted the ERD injections over a period of three months in spring 2015 applying 42,400 lbs of 3DMe mixed into 22,069 gallons. Post-injection activities include methane monitoring in the ERD areas, quarterly monitoring of the well network and area residential water wells, and annual paired sub-slab and indoor air vapor intrusion sampling. Additional scope tasks included a sewer soil gas assessment from the source building, and a sub-slab assessment (soil borings and temporary wells) below the source building following vacancy by the tenant.
Concentrations of tetrachloroethene (PCE) in groundwater in the ERD injection areas have decreased from over 3,000 ug/L to non-detect or below target cleanup levels (commercial/industrial groundwater to indoor air screening levels) for multiple on-site and residential levels for off-site wells. Institutional controls using Environmental Restrictive Covenants (ERCs) are anticipated for the Site and down-gradient properties to restrict potential groundwater use. The Site is presently being evaluated for hot-spot treatment of elevated soils below the source area building to mitigate sub-slab cVOCs vapor levels and completion of a supplemental ERD injection to expedite concentration reduction of groundwater in the source area and immediately downgradient.
